Geography and Climate
The
British Dependent Territory of Montserrat is situated at latitude 16*45”N and
Longitude 62*10”W, 25 miles southwest of Antigua. The Island is in the Easter
Caribbean, approximately 1,200 miles southeast of Miami. Montserrat measures
39.5 sq. miles (102.3 sq. kilometers, of which 13 sq. miles (33.7 sq.
kilometers) is now habitable.
Montserrat
is volcanic in origin and is dominated by three mountain ranges- Silver Hills,
Centre Hills and Soufriere Hills. Montserrat is unique in that it is one of the
few islands in the World where man co-exists with an active volcano.
The
climate is mildly tropical, with temperatures ranging between 24°C and 30°C
(76°F and 86°F). The higher temperatures are experienced during the months of
August and September, with January and February being the cooler months. Average
annual rainfall is 1,143 millimeters (45 inches). Heaviest rainfall is
experienced September to January. Low humidity and constant cooling breezes
maintain a pleasant climate year round.
